In the great tactical vs military gear bags debate, the correct answer will always boil down to the mission at hand. Tactical bags and military gear bags both prioritize extreme durability, often using 1000D Nylon and MOLLE webbing for modularity. Many will use the terms interchangeably, but there is a key difference. Tactical bags will focus on accessibility and organization for shorter high-intensity scenarios. Meanwhile, military bags are designed for longer-term and heavy-duty deployments. When deployed to Iraq as a Marine from the United States, our MOLLE bag was packed to the brim with everything that could possibly fit. However, when we patrolled the streets of Iraq on a daily basis, there were few cases where a MOLLE bag was the appropriate tool to carry extra load. Both tactical military bags and military gear bags serve a function, and that function is determined by the mission. We’ll examine both with you and help guide you to the proper tool for the mission at hand.

What is a Tactical Bag?

I can vividly remember Marines with a full MOLLE pack helping each other up off the ground, because merely getting to your feet with that much weight on your back was no easy task. Needless to say, this is not the mobility you hope for in a firefight. For shorter high-intensity patrols, we ditched military gear packs and opted for sleeker and more accessible tactical options.

This is the primary difference that needs to be understood when deciding between a tactical or military backpack. A tactical bag should give you added ability to carry extra gear or ammunition while still maintaining the ability to shoot, move, and communicate with ease. They are still rugged and can take a beating, but mobility and accessibility are prioritized. For a visual example, feel free to check out M-Tac’s line of tactical backpacks.

What is a Military Bag?

Military bags are designed to carry a significant amount of gear and are used when units may be relocating from one city/FOB/base to the next. In Iraq, our large, green, traditional seabags remained in Kuwait. Our MOLLE packs took everything that we would need to win the war across the departure line and into Iraq. This is the primary function of a military bag.

Now, that is not to say that military bags do not serve a tactical purpose. For long extended multiple-day assignments, one may very well use a military bag to bring enough gear to support them in a sustained environment. The difference is that when they hear the snap and crack of a bullet flying overhead in their direction, they are likely to drop those packs in many scenarios and engage the enemy.  Which One Do You Actually Need?: Use Case Guide

We covered this a bit in our descriptions above, but we’ll walk you through a few scenarios to help you process through the array of military tactical bags and packs and determine which option is best for your particular operation. What’s the difference between a tactical scenario and a long-term scenario in your world?

When do you need a tactical bag?

An easy way to describe a broad-based tactical scenario in any world is to think of a moment where you are going to have to fight it out while help is on the way. You’re not trying to win the war, but rather you are trying to win the firefight as those have been proven to be notoriously unkind to the second-place finisher.

As we patrolled the streets of Iraq, many times at just the squad level with only about 13 Marines, we knew that a quick reaction force was nearby. We knew that we had excellent air support and communication with those units was accessible.

Law enforcement officers, when conducting a raid, are not bringing their toothbrush and a change of clothes with them. They’re not bringing MREs or days’ worth of water. They are taking with them what they need to execute the mission and bring everyone home. Think about these scenarios in the world in which you operate and if it sounds relatable, then perhaps a tactical bag is the way to go.

When do you need a military gear bag?

The most logical use case in the civilian world for a military gear bag is when you believe that you will have to be on the move for extended periods of time and you need to take everything with you. Military gear bags are designed to be load bearing, meaning that they evenly distribute the weight across your back and shoulders. I’m an old enough Marine to remember the ancient ALICE packs which promised to do the same, but did no such thing. Ten miles with one of those and you felt it. A good military bag vs backpack will save the day.

In a bug-out scenario where you want to quickly take as much gear with you as you can, military gear bags are an excellent choice to have at the ready. Many civilian long-term camping or hiking scenarios could call for a military gear bag. Think about the world in which you plan to operate and ask yourself if you see yourself setting up shop in a particular location for a long time with no hope of resupply on the immediate horizon. This is a great case for a military gear bag. When no one is coming to save the day, you can only rely on the extent to which you have prepared.

Conclusion

As with any piece of survival or tactical gear, the best gear is always going to be the one you are the most comfortable and fits the mission at hand. Becoming comfortable with the gear requires repetition and training. The first time you try to hump it out over 10 miles with a military gear bag on your back, better not be the time your life depends on it. Make sure you are ready to handle the load for extended periods of time.

Likewise, the first time you try to access extra magazines from your tactical bag, better not be when rounds are being sent downrange in your direction. Whichever option you choose, be sure to train with it often. If you have any extended questions about tactical or military gear bags, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are tactical bags legal to own and carry?

They are absolutely legal to own and carry, as they are merely a matter of function and style preference. Now, what you put in the bag could land you in trouble depending on where you live. However, the bag itself is good to go.

Can I use a tactical bag as a range bag for firearms?

Tactical gear bags were designed with firearms and ammunition in mind. They are an excellent choice to bring to the range as long as you practice proper firearm safety.

What is the difference between a tactical bag and a military surplus bag?

Tactical bags are designed for use in short, high-tempo scenarios. A military surplus bag is a fairly broad term and could reference a long green military seabag or an old ALICE style military bag. Generally speaking, the larger the bag,  the more it was intended for long-term deployments.

How do I choose the right size tactical bag?

Without knowing your individual body type, we’d start by ensuring your body can still shoot, move, and communicate with ease while wearing it. If you feel that your mobility will be overly restricted, send it back before any warranty or guarantees expire.

Are tactical bags good for hiking and outdoor activities?

If you’re climbing Mt. Everest, we say buy gear that was specifically designed for that mission. For all other routine hiking and outdoor activities, tactical bags serve as a great dual use product. They excel in the great American outdoors and will show up for you in a fight when you need it most.
